Management Material? Here’s 10 courses to strengthen your managerial resume

According to management theorist, Henri Fayol (1841-1925), management consists of seven functions: planning, organizing, leading, coordinating, controlling, staffing and motivating. It doesn’t matter if you are managing a project or a corporate division, you are still managing people. As Mary Parker Follett (1868–1933), management guru of the early twentieth century, summed it up — management is “the art of getting things done through people”.  Therefore, to shore up your managerial skills and make your resume shine, a mix of courses that strengthen people skills as well as round out your overall business knowledge is necessary. These are my top ten picks.

First, I would recommend a straight up Management Training programme for those who have never taken one. Gatlin International has a good one that will provide an understanding of common accounting terms, marketing processes, including the roles that ethics and technology play. It also develops practical managerial skills, examines important topics in running a business in accord with legal requirements and covers tax issues, negotiation skills and the seven management disciplines.

Because we now operate in a global economy, every serious managerial candidate should have a good knowledge of international business. Nothing is more marketable in this day and age than a manager that can take a domestic success and turn it into a global success.  Certified Global Business Professional is a programme that gives a well-rounded education with modules that include Global Management, Global Marketing, Supply Chain Management and Trade Finance.

There are some short and inexpensive online courses available that are great for improving the much needed leadership and people skills needed to be a great manager. Delegating and Empowering, Successfully Conducting My Meetings and Developing My Staff’s Skills empower a manager to get more from their employees and each initiative they undertake.

Anyone who wants to be successful in the corporate world must be able to sell themselves and their ideas. Even the CEO is not exempt, as they must sell the Board of Directors and shareholders on their plans and visions. To improve these skills, I’d recommend these three short online courses: Selling My Ideas, Successful Public Speaking, and Developing My Negotiating Skills.  A good leader easily transfers their passion for an idea or project to everyone involved (and everyone they would like to involve).  These courses instill practical techniques to practice and master over time in your everyday leadership role.

The last two on my list are Project Management and Purchasing and Supply Management. A project management certification is a must on the resume for those who want to show that they have the skills to command a project and see it through to successful completion, on time and on budget. And, of course, any good manager will benefit immensely from developing a deep understanding of their supply chain and an integrated approach to planning, acquisition, flow and distribution, from raw component to finished products.

With these top ten courses under your belt, your resume will demonstrate that you have the managerial panache corporations seek today.
